Texting While Driving is a Huge Issue in New York
According to statistics gathered by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 10 percent of drivers under 20 involved in fatal car crashes were distracted at the time of the car crash. In another study by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute, texting while driving takes your attention away from the road for an average of five seconds. If you are driving 55 mph, that's enough time to cover the length of a football field.
It should then come as no surprise that using a cellphone to text or talk while driving destroys a person's ability to focus on the road and the traffic around him or her. As any New Yorker knows, traffic congestion is a big concern. Combine that with texting while driving and the risk of injury increases significantly.
The hazard distracted drivers create is so severe that the New York state government has banned the use of handheld devices and texting while driving in particular for all ages. Furthermore, in 2013 the government increased the penalty for distracted driving from three to five points on your driver's license. This is in addition to a maximum $200 fine, which was increased from $150 in 2014.
